How to earn your badge: 

1. Work for at least five days (on at least two different occasions) at a Group, District, County, Area or National Scout Activity Centre or campsite, helping the warden or manager however they need you.

2. Explain the maintenance needed for essential campsite equipment.

• Do a demonstration, if possible.

3. Explain and, where possible, demonstrate four of the following:

1. Make a booking for someone wanting to use the site
2. Show how to restore a camping area after use, including sowing grass
3. Show how you prevent pipes freezing during the winter and what steps to take when pipes burst
4. The importance of having clean toilets
5. Chemicals – what to use and how to use them safely
6. How to unblock a drain and prevent further blockages
7. The need for good site drainage and keeping ditches clear
8. How to dispose of refuse and use an effective recycling system

How to earn your badge: 

Choose 1 of the following options:

1. Assist a Group or Troop Quartermaster for at least three months.

1. Show ability in these areas:
   • care and storage of tents, including how to do simple repairs
   • care and storage of cordage. This includes whipping, splicing, hanking, coiling and safety inspections
   • safe storage and handling of fuels such as methylated spirits, paraffin, petrol and gas
   • care of cooking stoves and cooking utensils, including simple repairs, cleaning and general maintenance
   • convenient storage of a section’s training and games equipment
   • caring for and storing equipment used for adventurous activities, such as sailing gear, canoes and paddles, life jackets and buoyancy aids, go-karts or climbing ropes.
2. Keep a simple record showing equipment issued and returned.
3. Show you understand that general tidiness is the secret of good quartermastering. Explain how you achieved this in the Troop or Group store.

2. As equipment quartermaster, assist at a Nights Away experience for at least two days.

1. During the experience show you’re capable in at least three of these areas:
   • care and maintenance of all tentage, including the ability to do simple repairs to guy lines and fabric tears
   • care and storage of all cordage. This includes whipping, splicing, hanking, coiling and safety inspections.
   • safe storage and handling of fuels used by the camp, such as methylated spirits, paraffin, petrol and gas
   • care, maintenance and general storage of all tools such as axes, spades and saws
   • care and storage of equipment used for adventurous activities, such as sailing gear, canoes and paddles, life jackets and buoyancy aids, and climbing ropes.
2. Keep simple records, showing the equipment issued and returned.
3. Keep a portable first aid kit well stocked and maintained.
4. Choose tools to take to camp, to complete emergency repairs on equipment.
5. Show you understand that general tidiness is the secret of good quartermastering. Explain you achieved this at the Nights Away experience.

How to earn your badge: 

1. Show how to light a fire.

2. Help someone prepare a fire for cooking on.

3. Cook something using a billy can.

4. Cook something in the embers of a fire.

5. Cook something on a stick.

6. Show how to make the fire safe when you have finished with it. Extinguish the fire and make the area safe.

How to earn your badge: 

1. Show that you know how to use and look after a digital camera or smartphone camera.

Show how to change the mode, change the settings, use the zoom function, and transfer photos to another device.

2. Take at least five photos of your local area that could be used on a tourist leaflet or website.

3. Take photos while you’re on a trip, camp or another event.

Show 10 of your best photos to someone else after the event. You could present them in a scrapbook, on a screen, in a photo book or some other way.

4. Choose one of these activities to do:

1. Create two photos of the same thing, one in colour and one in black and white. Compare how the effects change the way the final picture looks.
2. Edit a photo using a smartphone or editing software. Explain what you have changed and why.
3. Make a short film on a subject of your choice.
4. Using a series of photos, make a short animation sequence.

How to earn your badge: 

1. Choose from one of the following demonstrating best practice and appropriate leadership throughout, as needed:

1. Lead a team of Explorers by running an activity on a camp
2. Lead a team of Explorers on an expedition
3. Represent the views of Explorers at a forum or event
4. Lead a team of explorers to deliver a project with them

2. Take an active role in running or delivering an activity in a new setting.

This could be with a different or younger section, or with new Unit members. You should show best practice, including how to stay safe, and appropriate behaviour throughout the activity.

3. Reflect on the leadership behaviours and abilities you’ve displayed. You can do this either on your own, or with a leader or trusted adult.

Think about what went well and what you might do differently next time. Decide on some ways you can further improve your leadership skills, and put these into practice at a future event or activity.

4. Complete one of the following:

1. In a setting of your choice, lead an activity or event and put your chosen actions into practice from your reflection in requirement 3.
2. Visit someone in a leadership role to see what behaviours they’re displaying. Compare their actions and how they lead to the results of your own reflection in requirement 3 to support your development as a leader.
3. Conduct your own research into a leader of your choice. Look at the leadership skills and behaviours they display at different times and why these might be appropriate.

How to earn your badge: 

1. Camp as a Scout for at least 15 nights

• You could camp in a tent, or try something new, from hammocks to bivouacs, or even indoors.

2. Lead a group of Scouts in the pitching, striking and packing of a four to six-person tent.

3. Find out what to look for when choosing a campsite and in deciding the best position to pitch tents.

4. Show that you understand and act on the reasons for hygiene and the importance of being safe and tidy in camp.

5. Show how you store food hygienically at camp.

6. Learn how to dispose of your rubbish safely and responsibly.

7. Construct two useful camp gadgets.

• Examples for this could include grease traps, a washing-up station, a camp larder, an altar fire, a flagpole, or a camp gate.

8. Plan a full menu for a weekend camp. Cook a least one full meal over an open fire.

9. With others in your Troop, plan and carry out a programme of activities for a weekend camp.

How to earn your badge: 

1. Complete four of these activities:

1. Choose a country and explore their traditions and culture around food and dining. Recreate a dining experience relating to your chosen country for your leaders, parents or another section.
2. Organise an activity for your Unit or a younger section that explores another country’s national celebration, festival or event (eg. Mela, Republic Day India, Chinese New Year)
3. Explore aspects of another country’s culture such as their greetings, religion and approach to gender. You could play a cultural simulation game or discuss the similarities and differences with culture in the UK.
4. Take part in an international Scouting experience such as an international jamboree, setting up an international link, or a Jamboree on the Air (JOTA)-Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) event.
5. Showcase a form of art or culture from another country. You could create a display of art you have researched or created yourself, or put on a cultural performance.
6. Participate in an event with an international theme. Discuss your experience with your Unit.

How to earn your badge: 

1. Find out about an environmental issue that is important to your local community.

It might be linked to:

• recycling and conservation
• energy efficiency in the home or your meeting place
• the building of new homes and local land use
• water, light, thermal, air or beach pollution
• coastal erosion
• the impact of tourism on the local environment.

2. Take part in an activity or project that improves local conservation.

It could take place during a weekend conservation camp or you could spread it over at least five weekly sessions.

You could look at:

• recycling
• reducing energy usage or renewable energy
• protecting important habitats or wildlife
• pollution
• erosion
• flooding

3. Get involved in a campaign to make others aware of an environmental issue.

You could write to your MP and other local agencies or speak to a community group.

How to earn your badge: 

1. Plan a menu for a weekend event for between four and six people.

• Include the quantities you’ll need and any dietary needs of the group for cultural, religious or medical reasons.

2. Show how and where to shop for the food and the best way to transport it.

3. Show how to store food properly, hygienically and in ways that prevent food poisoning.

• Explain what you might need to consider if you’re using an indoor kitchen or a camp kitchen.

4. Cook and serve at least one of the meals from your menu.

• The meal must be at least two courses and can be prepared on an open fire on camp or in a kitchen.

5. Demonstrate the best way to clear up afterwards.

• Clearing up should include washing up utensils, pots and pans, disposing of rubbish and leftover food in a way that prevents vermin or disease.
