Learn more about Thorrington Scout Camp

Thorrington

Thorrington is located in the north-east of Essex, just 7 miles outside of the historic town of Colchester. It is well situated to explore the south-east of the UK, with quick access to local transportation.

Although the site has been continuously developing over the years, it has been maintained as a traditional camping site, allowing for individual camping styles to be learned.

Our origins

Thorrington’s scouting beginnings start in 1948, when the 23 acres of land known as Thorrington plantation was donated to the Boy Scouts of Colchester by Sir David Papillon. We then further expanded in 1973 by an additional 6 acres.

Nowadays, the site is overseen by both Colchester North and Colchester Estuary districts, who meet regularly with the Thorrington trustee board to ensure the campsite’s smooth day-to-day running.

Our members

Thorrington is kept afloat fully by the goodwill of our volunteering teams. Everyone at Thorrington Scout Camp fulfils their role in a voluntary capacity, and lend their time to ensure that young people are able to explore the outdoors and learn key skills for their development.

There is always a role for someone at Thorrington and we’d love to hear from you if you’d be interested in volunteering.
